Paul Stanley

Paul Stanley is The Starchild: co-founder, singer and rhythm guitarist in KISS. He has been with the band from its inception until the present day.

Stanley was born Stanley Bert Eisen in New York City on 20 January 1952. He grew up in Manhattan and spent his childhood and adolescence hiding the fact that he had a deformed right ear that was also deaf.

In 1970, Stanley Eisen met Gene Klein, and eventually the two formed a band called Wicked Lester with a group of other local musicians. When Wicked Lester failed to fulfill what Eisen and Klein had in mind for their future, they decided to form a new band and adopted the names Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. They teamed up with Peter Criss and Ace Frehley and became KISS.

Stanley invented the character of The Starchild, where simplistic make-up combined with outstanding vocals and frontman agility made him a powerful focal point of KISS’ live shows. He is also known for writing and singing some of the band’s greatest songs, including Black Diamond (sung by Criss), Detroit Rock City, Love Gun, I Was Made For Lovin’ You and Crazy, Crazy Nights.

Stanley became a dominating force when KISS decided to take their make-up off in the 1980s. He led the band through the decade, often producing their records himself, and ultimately championed the reunion of the original KISS line-up in 1996.

Stanley published his autobiography in 2014, titled Face the Music: A Life Exposed.
